  3. The answer is simple.
    The equation to work this out is:

    0 = ((i*2-y)*2-y)*2-y
    where i is the number of flowers you start off with and y is the number of flowers given to the house owners.

    which equates to:
    8i = 7y

    now using logic one understands that both sides of this equation are total integers; unless you're allowed half a flower.

    For this to be true y must be a multiple of 8 and i must be multiple of 7.

    Therefore, whilst there are an infinite number of solutions, the minimum number of whole flowers required at the start is 7 and therefore the 8 is the number of flowers given away.

  5. The amount of flowers originally held must be seven-fourths as much as the amount of flowers given at each house.
    Write an equation where a is the amount of flowers originally held and x is the amount of flowers given at each house.
    2(2(a-x)-x)-x=0
    2(2a-2x-x)-x=0
    2(2a-3x)-x=0
    4a-6x-x=0
    4a-7x=0
    4a=7x
    a=(7/4)x
    Test my answer out it. It works!
