Town planning and the environment

Town planning and the Enviroment
In recent years town planning has seen a significant development in the area of environmental planning in urban and built-up areas. With growing concerns about global warming, pollution and the protection of flora and fauna it is of little surprise that environmental planning is now a key division within any planning office or department on a local, regional, national and even international level. Indeed, most development proposals now include an environmental impact analysis so that everyone involved in the project is aware of the potential damage (or lack thereof) to the environment that the development may cause.

Some of the key changes this interest in environmental planning has brought about are the protection and growth of wildlife corridors, an increase in green areas in inner city districts, the consideration of water health during the construction stage of any development project, and even the impact that new roads and urban areas may have on the surrounding environment. Environmental planners work closely with the environmental protection division, wildlife parks and experts, councils and local communities. If there is a protected area or animal located in the general vicinity of a proposed development, environmental planners will be called in to analyze the potential damage or destruction the development may cause. As such a large part of the environmental planner’s job is to propose solutions and alterations to plans so that developments can go ahead without compromising the integrity of the surrounding area’s delicate environmental balance. If you are concerned about a proposed development in your area and think that it may be harmful to the environment, it is advisable to get in touch with your local planning office.
